Short answers to what comes up most. If yours isn't here, use the Feedback tab on any page inside the app, or write to jon@blubberroom.com.

Getting started

  1. Add the people who eat with you, under People. Names are enough; they don't need accounts.
  2. Put five or six dishes in the recipe box. Start with the ones you could cook without looking anything up.
  3. Open the week and click an empty slot. Pick a recipe, or type what it is if it isn't a recipe.

Nothing is required. A week with three dinners in it is a useful week.

Connecting Claude or ChatGPT

Add https://mealgrep.com/mcp as a custom connector, sign in when it sends you here, and the tools appear in your chats. Setting it up has to happen on a computer; after that your phone works too. The full walkthrough is here.

To cut it off, go to Settings → Agents and disconnect it. Access stops there and then.

The terminal client

There's a small CLI called mpx that speaks to the same API with a key you create under Settings → Agents. It isn't packaged for install yet, so ask me if you want it.

Questions

A slot is empty and I don't want it

Leave it. Empty means undecided, which is honest. If you never plan breakfast, turn that slot off entirely in Settings → Household and it stops appearing.

We ordered in. What do I put?

Type the food in as a plain label — "Thai", "pizza" — and mark it as bought out with the prep switch. It counts in the week's totals, and the eat-out ratio on the stats page is the number I'd watch.

What's the difference between planned and eaten?

Planning is what you intended; the status on each food is what happened. Marking things eaten or not eaten is what makes the plan-versus-actual comparison mean anything, and it's two taps on the grid.

One of us eats something different

On the meal, each person is set to share it, have a variation, have their own plate, or skip. If a swap is permanent — rice instead of pasta, every time — put it on the person as a standing substitution and apply it to a meal in one click.

Why can't the assistant invent a recipe?

Because the recipe box is a closed set, deliberately. A plan should come out of what your family already eats. It can add a recipe if you ask it to, and then plan with it.

My plant count looks too low

Only tagged food counts. A recipe carries its plant list; a food typed in as "Thai" contributes nothing until someone says what was in it. You can edit the recipe, or ask the assistant to fill the tags in.

I want my account deleted

Write to jon@blubberroom.com and I'll delete it and everything in it. There's no button for it yet.
